Nicholas Pope, a pioneering British artist who pushed the boundaries of art with his innovative use of natural materials, has passed away at the age of 77. Pope's artistic journey was marked by a series of remarkable transformations, each more captivating than the last. His work, often described as heroic, involved testing materials to the brink of destruction, as seen in his piece 'Mr and Mrs Arnolfini' (1978), where he shattered pieces of Bath stone. Yet, this daring approach took a turn in 1982 when Pope contracted an encephalitic virus in Tanzania, which led to a profound shift in his artistic direction. This health crisis, while devastating, sparked a new phase of his career, marked by the exploration of non-natural materials such as epoxy resin, ceramics, and oilbar. His art, once characterized by its natural elements, now took on a new, softer, and more unpredictable form. Pope's artistic evolution was not limited to his materials; his colors became more vibrant, and his forms more fluid. He began to create intricate hanging sculptures, like the 'Mr and Mrs Pope' series, which evoked the intimacy of married life through the interplay of intermingled internal organs. These works, crafted with no plan or pattern, were then washed in his washing machine at the highest heat, resulting in a unique texture that was then sent to Beijing for further manipulation by artisanal sculptors. One of his most remarkable pieces, 'Apostles Speaking in Tongues Lit By Their Own Lamps' (1993-96), featured tall terracotta figures bearing oil lamps, a powerful symbol of the speaking in tongues in the gospels. This piece was first displayed at Tate Britain in 1996 and later around the apse of Salisbury Cathedral in 2014. Pope's artistic journey was not just about materials and forms; it was also about the human experience. Outside of his art, he worked as a Samaritan counsellor and, with his wife Janet, created an orchard at their home in Much Marcle, Herefordshire. They also produced and marketed Pope's Perry in the 2010s. Pope's passing marks the end of a remarkable artistic career, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and a profound impact on the art world.
